Matthew resides over the daily live current affairs show The Wright Stuff for Channel Five, one and a half hours of lively debate. The series celebrated its Fifth Anniversary last year.  Matthew also present BBC1’s Inside Out, reporting on a variety of topical issues in and around the capital.  Matthew is often brought in to comment on shows like Daily Politics for BBC2 and This Week for BBC1.

 Matthew may have gone on to be Britain’s best-known showbiz gossip columnist but he began his career at the tender age of 14 when he starred in Big Wheels and Sailors for the Children’s Film Foundation.  Despite this early brush with stardom, Matthew decided to concentrate on his academic career and went on to study English and Drama at Exeter University.

After graduating, Matthew tried his hand at something entirely different and settled on journalism.  He moved quickly up the ladder from local papers to the nationals and at the age of 26, he joined The Sun’s ‘Bizarre’ showbiz desk.  Two years later, he left to help develop a new programme for Sky with Richard Littlejohn.

The Richard Littlejohn Show gave Matthew his first break in television, regularly providing the show with news packages as well as zany features.  When the series ended twelve months later, Fleet Street persuaded Matthew to return with a three-month stint on the Today newspaper.

In 1995, Matthew was asked to join The Mirror and set up his showbiz gossip column.  With his cheeky rubber faced grin; he has charmed his way in to the hearts of some of the biggest names in the business landing interviews with Cher, Madonna, Elizabeth Taylor, Elton John and Gwyneth Paltrow. 

Through his column, Matthew started to attract attention on TV, and in 1998 he consolidated his TV work joining GMTV as the show’s TV critic with a once a week slot alongside Lorraine Kelly. Other TV credits include reporting for Rich And Famous and guest presenting This Morning,both for ITV1.

Radio wise Matthew hosted his own show The Weekender every Friday night for BBC Radio 2 for over two years, encompassing all the latest developments in the world of arts and entertainment.  He recently hosted The Freak Zone for BBC6 Music showcasing his extensive knowledge of music.
